Empanadas & Sarnies
When the Monday morning lurch from slumber to shower gets too tedious I take a deposit from the memory bank and choose a favourite moment to savour and the one that’s doing the job currently is hiking atop the Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina. A slow crunching ice field, home to crevasses, sink holes, aqua marine blues I’ve never witnessed before, forming a jagged roof on the landscape. It was here on this Patagonian front on a Monday in October testing out the vicious teeth of our crampons that we met Nichola and Richard (British émigrés in Australia, travelling through South America).
Stopping for sandwiches and empanadas at lunchtime we parked ourselves mid glacier and shared sarnies whilst absorbing the surreal moment. A Monday, in Patagonia sitting on top of the only advancing Glacier in South America munching on ham ‘n cheese. Richard a medic and Nichola, former lawyer now Photographer/Visual Artist of some modesty. Later that evening, joined by a fabulous Malbec, we exchanged details and promised to keep in touch. Back in Blighty wwilfin (what was I looking for on the internet) I caught an email from Nichola announcing her digital gallery, Nicola Hill Photography. Clicking on the link I was greeted by a visual treat, photography which leaps into your heart and warms your soul, accessing emotions which are definitely absent on Monday mornings, adventure, freedom, curiosity and wonder. Capturing natural beauty around the globe…I want her job! In the meantime I want one of her pictures.
