A Soft Touch
A Complete Yarn
“Touch me...touch me...please.”
Overcome by weakness I did more than touch. Furtively glancing over my shoulder the coast looked clear, outstretching my palm I stroked, slowly, gently seduced by the sensation and entertained by the thrill of being caught red handed. Startled by the familiar voice and touched by the flush of embarrassment I retracted my fingers.
“What are you doing?” enquired the Maharani.
“I...I...I was just...” I stuttered and stretched for more words.
“...I know, it’s so soft” she cut in.
Turning the label of the greige throw she revealed the source of its appeal, 100% alpaca. The loom behind us stopped clacking and the owner piped up, “everybody does that, it’s just too tempting not to touch, everything in the shop is hand woven, happy for you to touch some more.” We did as instructed and collected some more tactile experiences, cashmere, silk, fine wool. Sophisticated yarn so superbly woven into graceful timeless classics, blankets, throws, scarves and soft furnishings galore.
The range speaks of perky dedication, the hands behind the collection? Katherine Fraser.
“I started off in art but my hands wandered!” she chuckled, “they sat me in front of a loom and I didn’t have a clue, then addiction set in, I’m a weave-a-holic I can’t help it.”
This young ambitious talent carries a mission to take artisanal weaving into the mainstream, accessibly priced, imaginatively conceived..get there before the masses do.
I know, she’s got a gorgeous collection…I love BAires and can’t stop writing about it, check out http://www.urbanrajah.com/travel and you’ll see what I mean. Thanks for dropping by.
